Causes of Hearing Loss

Because the auditory system is so delicate, there are many reasons why it may not function normally. 

Hearing loss can be congenital (at birth) or acquired due to a variety of factors. Here are a few reasons why: 


-Pre-natal factors such as drug exposure, cytomegalovirus (CMV),  rubella

-Neo-natal factors such as hypoxia, hyperbilirubinemia   (jaundice)

-Genetic factors and syndromes





-Brain injury or trauma

-Aging (Presbycusis)

-Diabetes

-Measles

-Acoustic Trauma (sudden or repeated exposure to

 excessive noise)

-Ototoxic drugs (e.g. chemotherapy)
